Nepal Lepers & Covid 19 Pandemic Fallout

As of July 7th Kathmandu had 20,000 recorded cases with 800 new ones recorded in the city daily. There have been 1,647 suicides during lockdown; which is now extended. Hanok our leader writes:

Thousands are without hope with no support, food relief or help from the Gov’t’ Gyan: Many disabled people old and young, have appeared on Kathmandu streets desperate and begging for food. With the money you sent Vic, we gathered them in our area, provided chairs to sit on to honour them. Then suddenly they started shouting, pointing and waving, to stop a very old bent over lady getting into the provisions line up. It was quickly apparent she had no fingers or thumbs on both hands; an old ‘Leper’ lady. Their response culturally was no different to the Lepers in Jesus day. We gave her food, and one of our team sat with her to find out more about her. It has led to an amazing new ‘door-opened’ to 196 other Lepers. Even sitting her in a chair in public, is a visible acknowledgement to all watching; She is our honoured guest equal with us, as are all others disabled seated to get food help.’ (She’s given food; middle left picture)

Amma took us to the present Leprosy mission hospital we thought long closed. (46yrs ago, in 1974 I returned to Nepal with a team from the UK and we visited the ’Leper-Colony’ and first hospital for treating them. We now help leper communities in Mumbai living under the railway bridges; feeding 50 families each Sunday after the church service; our nurses washing, treating, dressing decaying feet, hands and face; (working with lepers repeated in 3 other Indian Cities)

Their only human touch is a dedicated mission Dr. All without fingers/toes and needing surgical help: It’s their first outside visit, and food gifts.

Long ago cast out of family. No one has anyone to bring them food. Hospitals don’t supply meals. This is an incredible day for each person!

This felt like the recent discovery of the disabled home with all its needs, we reported on. Rejected Lepers isolated, meeting no one; and we just ‘happen’ to be led to them! Divine appointments! This has with your giving, brought help, hope and life, to this Leper hospital, and other Leper families nearby. Thank you for your giving and prayers for us. The increasing Virus in India, Nepal, Kenya, N/Nigeria and Pakistan, means I am inundated daily with calls for help. We have so many genuine and desperate basic needs. Monsoon rains = landslides and loss of everything, its beyond description. We need your help to do what’s possible. It is truly life giving. Vic. Please contact me. vicagledhill@gmail.com
